Technique, Conditioning, and Control:
Toning & Isolation Techniques for the Tribal Fusion Belydancer
(for all levels)
Combining the incomparable technique of the Salimpour format with drills from Yoga and Pilates, this class will break it down to the nitty-gritty!  Learn to control the muscles to create precise, clean movements, increase the size of moves, and build coordination for layering--musically multi-tasking--within the body.  Emphasis is on proper alignment, the action of the different muscle groups, and spine and joint health, and energy flow, for a long and happy life as a dancer!  We want to be able to do this when we're eighty, right?  Please dress as though you are attending a yoga class, mat and water bottle are recommended.

“UNMATA au naturel”
Modern Bellydance Fusion

This multi-level workshop will outline two tribal fusion combinations emphasizing technique and isolation.  The first combination will incorporate the building blocks of UNMATA’s modern bellydance style. The second combination will focus primarily on the Hula Fusion nuance.
Each movement will be outlined within a tribal cueing system so that it may be added to any troupe’s choreography or tribal vocabulary. Amy will describe and drill each individual movement, then fasten them together into an accessible tribal combo that will be practiced in useful group and duet formations.
This workshop will be fun, fast, and furious. UNMATA believes in beat-your-butt technical practice, so bring water and come prepared to sweat.

****12:30 – 2:30pm Unmata
$35 ($40 Day of Class)
Moves You’ve Hopefully Never Thought of Before

This fresh-approach workshop will reveal the secrets of UNMATA’s modern bellydance fusion.  Amy will describe, demonstrate, and drill some of the striking stuff you’ve only seen the girls whip out on stage.

Each movement will emphasize specific technique and capture the nuance of UNMATA’s popular style. Because this class is designed for the intermediate to advanced dancer, a sufficient understanding of balance, timing, and isolation skill is prerequisite. Curriculum can easily be adapted for cabaret or tribal disciplines.

Heather Stants is a lifelong artist and dance enthusiast with a degree in photography and fine arts. Her explorations in tribal bellydance began over ten years ago when she became the assistant director of "Read My Hips" (www.readmyhips.com) in Chicago, IL. in 1999 Heather moved to San Diego, CA and formed "Urban Tribal Dance Company."
Heather's diverse movement and arts background feeds her creativity and her innovative approach to choreography.
Urban Tribal Dance Company is known for it's "urban" and modern influenced dance style, a paired down costume emphasizing body movements over ornamentation, athleticism and the use of the dance form as a means of personal expression and interpretation. Their creativity has twice earned them the title of "troupe of the year" in Zaghareet Magazine's golden belly awards. In addition to teaching several weekly classes in San Diego since 1999, Heather Stants and Urban Tribal Dance Company have been touring extensively since 2004 sharing their love of modern tribal bellydance with dancers in the U.S. and abroad. About URBAN TRIBAL DANCE COMPANY & Heather Stants
Percussionist & educator Daveed Korup sparks the imagination with his evocative synthesis of North African and Turko-Persian traditions interwoven with contemporary Western percussion styles. Author of TAO TE DRUM Vol. 1 & 2: Eastern Drumming for Western Drummers and Drumming by the Numbers, Daveed’s artistic vision is centered on the belief that “The world is a giant drum just waiting to be played. SO PLAY IT !!!”

Since 1983, Daveed has been on an ever-evolving rhythm journey. Through school programs, residency projects, summer drum camps, festivals and workshops, he shares his knowledge of world percussion in the guise of DrumFest!, a hands-on, multi-cultural drumming experience for people of all ages. With an extensive collection of hands-on multi-cultural lesson plans, that promotes strong curriculum connections between the drum (the universal storyteller) and core subjects, i.e. reading, writing, math, science, etc, Korup is a true rhythm evangelist.

The search for new challenges has lead him to composing and performing for contemporary dance, ballet and bellydance companies, while collaborating with a diverse collection of eclectic ensembles, including SEEDS OF TIME ---percussion duo (WWW.LIGHTS-ONPRODUCTIONS.COM); TURKU --- Eurasian folk ensemble  (WWW.TURKUMUSIC.COM); THE MOVING POETS THEATRE OF DANCE (WWW.MOVINGPOETS.ORG); and WITHOUT BORDERS (WWW. WITHOUTBORDERS.COM), a new chamber ensemble for the 21st century.

Daveed's long list of accomplishments also includes a recent DVD release called Whirlwinds, his own Daveed Signature Series of percussion instruments from Mid-East Manufacturing, and even finds him representing the United States at the Third Annual Sharq Taronalari Music Festival, sponsored by UNESCO and the Uzbekistan government!
